The goals for the SVTC cycling program are to provide improved biking techniques and skills such: pedaling technique, hand positioning, seat position, maneuvering corners, up-hills, down-hills, braking and heart rate pacing for biking. Some time trials practice sessions will be held to focus on "On the Bike" skills and fitness training based on heart rate. The program will encourage pack riding skills and teamwork. While these skills do not directly improve triathlon performance, the ability to ride comfortably and fast with other people will increase individual opportunity to ride with better and better riders in the SF Bay Area.

Road Rules:

  1. Please wear a helmet.
  2. Obey all traffic laws, especially coming to a full stop at all stop signs.
  3. Point out hazards, traffic and other obstacles to fellow riders.
  4. In addition to what individuals call out, look out for yourself before you GO.
  5. Work together.
  6. Have fun.
Workouts:

The cycling program will consist of two types of workouts. These workouts will be described in detail with e-mail messages several days before the actual workout session. The first category of workouts will focus on specific aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. The workouts will be defined by RPM, Heart rate, pedaling technique and other technical factors. These workouts are meant to help athletes specialize and focus on their fitness skill set.

The second category of workouts is the group ride. These rides are meant to be challenging with only one or two regroups. While the pace and maneuvers will be assertive, this ride in not meant to replace some of the fastest established rides in the area, specifically the Spectrum and Wednesday night Valley rides. Instead, this ride is meant to be a stepping stone for more advanced rides in the Bay Area. This training group ride will encourage and support some of the fun and essential maneuvers of group riding which may include riding in a pace-line, launching a break and bridging. Even though the group will not stop for people off the back, the ride is intended to attract riders who may struggle with the pace somewhere in the middle of the ride. These workouts are meant to help athletes improve overall bike handling skills at speed in traffic.
